Musa basjoo, part of the 'exotic
starter kit', is nevertheless an impressive plant and, at least here in
Torquay, a reliable flowerer. Give it a warm summer, plenty of water,
lots of fertilizer and it will perform in sun or light shade. The enemy
is wind, which shreds the leaves mercilessly. A sheltered spot will therefore
preserve its appearance. The small bananas are totally inedible but, when
cut open, do have a slight smell of the bananas we are all used to. |
