There are several species of Trillium, all from North America. This small woodland plant, some 12" (30 cm) tall, is a particular favourite of mine: it delights the eye with both its splendidly mottled foliage and striking flowers. As befits the name, trilliums have leaves and petals arranged in threes. I have not found these plants especially easy to grow - they take long to establish, they spread very slowly and do not flower reliably.
