The winter-flowering Iris stylosa
springs into action sometimes as early as September and carries on into
March/April. This iris is native to the north African coast but, surprisingly,
is very cold resistent; it prefers to be grown in well-drained soil in full
sun in order for it to give its best. In my view it is a splendid plant
which I would not wish to be without. For best effect and in order for the
leaves not to hide the low-growing flowers the foliage can be cut back strongly
in the autumn just before flowering.
