There are a number of different mahonias
in Southern Comfort but the most impressive is the slightly tender (but
quite hardy here) Mahonia lomariifolia. The late Christopher Lloyd
wrote that it made him 'weak and babbling with admiration'. They are mostly
winter flowering, moderately scented, have very distinctive foliage and
are easy to grow.
