Spring is the most colourful season on
the rear terraces: Ceanothus impressus (centre) , Acacia verticillata
(top right) , Yucca recurvifolia
(below Acacia), Euphorbia mellifera (just visible flowering
middle right), Trachycarpus fortunei (bottom right) and a variegated
Phormium 'Sundowner' (bottom left). Ceanothus impressus
from Califirnia is undoubtedly the most impressive of all late spring flowering
shrubs - the flowers are a dramatic deep royal blue and cover the whole
bush. Like all Ceanothus species it requires a warm sunny position
and a well-drained acid soil.
