Begonia luxurians accompanies
tree ferns, Woodwardia and Blechnum in the 'rainforest'.
We did not expect much success with this reputedly tender plant. At Southern
Comfort it has thrived and has reached about 2 metres. The shelter given
from above by ferns and palms probably contributed to its success. It contributes
very well to a 'jungly' atmosphere. The plant finally succumbed to some
severe winters and did not reappear in 2012. Under conditions of exceptionally
severe winters it is probably best treated as a bedding out plant and repleced
as necessary from an 'insurance stock' kept protected under glass.
