Trachycarpus fortunei is a fully hardy palm. It is reputed to withstand temperatures down to -15°C with no resulting damage. It is certainly a palm to be recommended because it is also reasonably fast-growing (at least for a palm), it is not too fussy as to soil type and it flowers after just a few years. At Southern Comfort T. fortunei has been seeding itself around the garden for many years with the result that we probably have several hundred seedlings at any one time. Fortunately, as a weed it is relatively easy to control. The photograph shows a male T. fortunei flowering in the 'rainforest'.
